September 23, 2015Mara receives Doctorate in Musical Arts from University of TorontoSince commencement at University of Toronto, I am happy to say that my doctoral dissertation is now live on TSpace. Feel free to take a look. My research examines the current performance practice of ballet excerpts for clarinet from five ballets: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, and Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, and Cinderella. Research has been published on the performance practice of symphonic orchestra and opera repertoire for clarinet, however, there is a paucity of research that examines the current performance practice techniques of orchestral ballet clarinet excerpts. The methodology of this research consisted of identifying major orchestral ballet clarinet excerpts in the canon and interviewing five experienced principal clarinetists in North American ballet orchestras. There are some great excerpts for clarinet throughout the dissertation as well as great tips from the orchestral ballet clarinetists interviewed for this project. Please let me know what you think about my research!

March 31, 2015Converging PathsOn Tuesday, March 31st at 7:30pm, the Israeli-Iranian Musical Initiative will present both the exciting world premiere of three new compositions, conducted by guest conductor Shalom Bard (Toronto Symphony Orchestra Resident Conductor 2012-2014) and a collaborative performance with renowned guest artist from Montreal, Saeed Kamjoo, Iranian Kamanche virtuoso. Supporting the evening's debut are the Toronto Arts Council, co-sponsors the Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Toronto and partners the North York Arts and Koffler Center of the Arts.

The evening will reflect the encounter of Israeli-Jewish and Iranian cultures through original compositions by collective members Parisa Sabet, Dan Deutsch and Noam Lemish. These pieces incorporate Jewish and Persian traditional music, the poetry of renowned Iranian poet Omar Khayyám and Israeli popular songs. Highlighting the event will be composer-performers Lemish and Deutsch, on piano and tenor saxophone, teaming up with guest Saeed Kamjoo, Kamanche, for a powerful improvisatory exploration of traditional music from Israel and Iran.

The project presents the fruitful possibilities of cross-cultural musical collaboration. In a statement from co-artistic director Dan Deutsch: "this project reaches out to the Jewish, Israeli, and Iranian communities as well as the broader Canadian society, promoting a cultural and artistic dialogue for audience members as well as for the performing participants."

June 1, 2012Piedmont Press Review"The piece and the performers were united in purpose. Beautiful tone, perfection of technique, instrumental balance and lofty musicality were but a few of the attributes. All was lithe and dexterous."
